Jeff Kimmel (b. Greenville, SC) is a Chicago-based clarinetist, composer and sound artist. His work explores memory, repetition and uncertainty by melding acoustic sounds, analog media and unstable electronic systems in a process that embraces imperfection and transformation.
2025 saw the release of “The other side of the air” — a duo with organist Jack Langdon on Dinzu Artefacts, described as “deeply compelling and tender” (Peter Margasak, Nowhere Street). He has also released and appeared on albums on New Focus Recordings, AKP Recordings, Amalgam, Peira and Orbit 577. His new solo record, “In Plain Sight”, will be released on Low Impact Recordings in the summer of 2026.
Performances include appearances at Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Art, Logan Center for the Arts, Hyde Park Art Center, and the Chicago Cultural Center. He has performed throughout the U.S., toured Chile with Manual Cinema, and appears regularly on improvised music concerts throughout Chicago.
His work has been supported by the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and the Atlantic Center for the Arts.
