Quartet at the Whistler - December 22

Next Wednesday, December 22, my quartet will be performing at The Whistler in Logan Square as part of their jazz series. The group features Keefe Jackson on tenor sax, Devin Hoff on bass and Marc Riordan on drums. We'll play 2 sets starting at 10pm, and there's no cover charge.

I'm currently finishing up an album we recently recorded at Strobe Recording, a project funded by a CAAP grant I received from the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs.

New Quartet Performs This Week

I'm pleased to announce some performances this week by a new quartet I'm leading. The group features Keefe Jackson on tenor sax, Devin Hoff on bass, and Marc Riordan on drums. We'll be performing my original compositions, as well as some pieces Marc contributed, at the Skylark tomorrow and Elastic on Thursday.

I'll also be playing an improvised set at Heaven Gallery on Saturday, 11/20, with Brian Labycz on electronics and Derek Baron on drums. Marc Riordan opens with a solo piano set at 10pm.

Hank Jones' Solo on Pannonica

In tribute to the pianist Hank Jones, who passed away recently, I am posting my transcription of his solo on Pannonica, recorded on Joe Lovano's album Joyous Encounter. I am not 100 % certain about the accuracy of the left hand, as most of the chords are not sustained long enough to identify them precisely.

Special thanks to Marc Riordan for the inspiration to transcribe this as well as for as some assistance on some tricky spots.
